STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!
Our Price $29.88 We strongly recommend using a router sub base with any dovetail jig. Many routers, sad to say, are not quite precise enough to use on dovetail jigs. There are two problems: 1. The base may not always be stiff enough. The result is a mysterious gap at the end of your joint where the plastic router base “caves in” as it begins to lose the support of the guide rails near the end of the jig, and allows the bit to cut too deep. Try pressing on your router base with your thumbs and you’ll see what we mean. 2. Another problem is that the axis of the router collet may not be in line with the axis of the base, in other words, eccentric. The result of a router bit that’s eccentric to the guide bushing can be a misaligned joint. A good quality router sub base will fix both problems. It also provides better visibility. We’ve included a centering cone with our router sub base that allows you to accurately center the sub base (and therefore your guide bushing) when you install the sub base. Our router sub base also has one other unique feature. You may have noticed AKEDA guide bushings have a small notch on the rim. This notch fits a pin on our sub base to prevent the guide bushing from rotating when you tighten it. The guide bushing is not included with the sub base. Our sub base is 6-1/2” dia. (165mm) by 3/8” (9mm) thick clear acrylic and the recess for the guide bushing is precision machined, so it installs accurately every time. It includes all the necessary mounting hardware. Follow the installation instructions carefully.
